Saudi Arabia’s LED Energy Efficiency Standards: What Every Building Contractor Must Comply With

Saudi Arabia has made energy efficiency a national priority under Vision 2030, and the lighting sector is one of the key targets. If you are a building contractor, facility manager, or developer, here is what you need to know to stay compliant.

The Saudi Building Code and Lighting

The Saudi Building Code (SBC) includes energy performance requirements for lighting installations in commercial and residential buildings. These requirements specify maximum lighting power density (LPD) — measured in watts per square metre — for different space types.

SASO Energy Efficiency Requirements for LED Products

SASO standards require LED lamps and luminaires to meet minimum efficacy levels. For commercial LED luminaires, the minimum is typically 80 lumens per watt, though premium specifications for government projects often require 100+ lumens per watt. Products that do not meet these thresholds cannot receive SASO certification.

Energy Labelling

Saudi Arabia has adopted an energy labelling system similar to the EU energy label. LED products sold in the Kingdom must carry the appropriate energy label indicating their efficiency class. As of recent updates, only A and B class products are recommended for new installations.
