What Does Photometric Testing Measure?

A full IES photometric test measures luminous flux (total lumens), luminous intensity distribution (beam angle and pattern), luminous efficacy (lumens per watt), colour rendering index (CRI), and colour temperature (CCT). These numbers determine whether a luminaire will actually perform as specified on your project drawings.

How to Read an IES Report

Look for the luminous flux value (total lumens), the efficacy figure (lumens per watt — anything above 100 lm/W is good for LED), and the beam angle. Compare these numbers to your project specification. If a supplier’s marketing material says 10,000 lumens but their IES report shows 7,500 lumens, you have found a problem before it becomes your problem.
