Understanding Hazardous Area Zones

Zone 0: Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods. Requires Ex ia or Ex ma certified luminaires. Extremely rare for lighting applications.

Zone 1: Explosive atmosphere likely under normal operation. Requires ATEX/IECEx Group II, Category 2 certified luminaires.

Zone 2: Explosive atmosphere present only under abnormal conditions. Requires ATEX/IECEx Group II, Category 3 certified luminaires. The most common classification in Saudi petrochemical facilities.

What Documentation to Demand

For any hazardous area luminaire, demand: ATEX or IECEx certificate number, the exact Zone and temperature class (T-class) for which it is certified, and the installation and maintenance manual. Saudi Aramco projects additionally require compliance with SAES-P-123 electrical area classification documentation.

Temperature Class Matters in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s extreme ambient temperatures mean that luminaires must be specified with adequate thermal derating. A T4 (135°C surface temperature) rated luminaire operating in a 55°C ambient environment must not have its surface temperature approach the auto-ignition temperature of the specific gas present.
